BOWIE (EAST) LHP CARLOS MEDINA allowed just a first-inning double over five scoreless innings (0 BB, 6 SO) to beat Reading 5-0 in his first double-A start after going 4-6, 3.79 ERA for Delmarva. RHP CHAD PARONTO came on to allow one hit over the final four innings to record his first save since joining the club from Frederick at the beginning of August. He whiffed seven, including the side in the ninth inning. The loss for the Phillies was their eighth in a row. CALGARY (PCL) scored four runs in the top of the 13th inning to beat Tacoma 8-5. 1B JEFF LIEFER snapped the 4-4 tie with a two-run double and scored on a single by C DAVE TOTH. 3B JASON EVANS then smacked a triple to score Toth. CLINTON (MID) OF JOHNNY HUNTER launched a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge Burlington 3-2. FRESNO (PCL) Pinch hitter KEITH WILLIAMS collected a pair of doubles in a seven-run fourth inning as the Grizzlies beat Tucson 13-3 to go into the playoffs on a winning note. JACKSONVILLE (SOU) OF GLEN BARKER completed an error-free season as the Suns beat Huntsville 8-2. He collected 16 assists and recorded 307 putouts in 110 games. The Suns make their way into the playoffs after setting new Southern League standards with 1416 hits, 2230 total bases and a .290 average. C ROBERT FICK and OF GABE KAPLER both ended the season with 47 doubles, sharing the new league record in that category and helping the club reach 323 doubles for the season, another new league record. Fick accumulated six doubles in seven September games to catch up to Kapler. KNOXVILLE (SOU) OF PETE TUCCI hit a pair of home runs (3-3, 1 3B, 3 RBI) in a 9-8 win against Chattanooga. OF MIKE FRANK homered twice (3-5, 3 RBI) in the loss. The Smokies are heading to the post season after winning the second half in their division. MOBILE (SOU) OF JOHN CURL cranked a first-inning grand slam and later added a three-run blast in the seventh inning of an 11-0 win against West Tenn. NEW BRITAIN (EAST) RHP BRENT STENTZ worked a perfect ninth inning, fanning two, to notch his minor league-leading 43rd save in a 2-0 win over Norwich. ORLANDO (SOU) OF LUIS TINOCO, who had drilled a three-run homer in the seventh inning to tie the score, connected for an RBI double in the top of the ninth inning to snap the 9-9 tie and the Rays tacked on two more runs to beat Carolina 12-9. The Mudcats had hung a seven spot on the board in the second inning, fueled by a single and an RBI double by 1B GARRETT LONG and a three-run double by SS KEVIN HAVERBUSCH. Rays 3B PAUL TORRES drove in runs in ten consecutive games August 29-September 7 (13-35, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 15 RBI, 1 SB). OF MICAH FRANKLIN went 2-for-2 with a homer and two RBI in the loss, driving in runs in eight consecutive games (13-32, 4 2B, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 2 SB). He also ended the season with a .655 slugging percentage, four points higher than Las Vegas' George Arias. WEST MICHIGAN (MID) 1B ANTUAN BUNKLEY delivered in RBI single in the first inning of a 9-7 win over Kane County to establish a new team record with 91 RBI. 2B PEDRO SANTANA swiped his 64th base, also a new club record, in the seventh inning.
